From the seams of memory, this fifty-year-old home leads a nostalgic journey into 1950s Taiwan, where innovative restoration and vintage decor redefine 'Taiwanese style,' reviving tradition in a modern light.

This design project transforms a mid-20th-century Taiwanese residence into a culturally rich guest house by seamlessly blending the past and present through a delicate balance of preservation and innovation. The space retains its original architectural structure while reinterpreting it with contemporary elements, creating a unique fusion of nostalgia and modernity. Classic vintage furniture is revitalized alongside carefully integrated local Taiwanese features such as iron window grilles, stained glass windows, and wooden frames, defining a distinctive Taiwanese style that bridges historical memory with current design trends.

Drawing inspiration from the simple yet rich lifestyle of Taiwan in the 1950s and 1960s, the guest house reimagines the warmth and intimacy of that era within a contemporary context. By seamlessly blending tradition with innovation, the design crafts a narrative that is both emotionally resonant and visually striking. Reclaimed materials are thoughtfully repurposed, from transforming restored iron window grilles into lighting fixtures to converting old wooden windows into bar tables. Stained glass, restored with modern techniques, becomes a vibrant focal point as light interacts with its colors, creating dynamic visual effects throughout the day.

The two-story, 150-square-meter space is designed with a balance of aesthetic beauty and functional usability. The first floor features a living room, dining area, kitchen, and a multifunctional space, while the upper floor offers bedrooms and quiet reading corners. The layout emphasizes smooth circulation and strategically placed visual highlights, enhancing both comfort and engagement. Structural reinforcements ensure safety while maintaining the building’s historical character, integrating modern conveniences with the warmth of traditional Taiwanese homes.

The project’s main challenge was balancing the aged materials with modern hospitality needs. Through careful restoration and creative design, cultural elements were preserved and revitalized with new purpose.
