Wuxi new reading space Zhong Shu Fang

Constructed in 1915, the Wuxi Bell Tower is not only an iconic landmark of Wuxi but also a witness to the development of modern Chinese libraries. Today, the Zhong Reading Yard has been established here, aiming to perfectly blend its century-old historical heritage with a reading space.
The design of Zhong Reading Yard centers on “nostalgia, functionality, warmth, culture, and quality.” The design team chose materials that align with the original architectural structure to restore the Bell Tower’s characteristics and style.
The first floor is primarily designed to stage exhibitions while striving to preserve the original style of the Wuxi Bell Tower. Exposed ceilings and upward lighting design reveal the tower’s historical charm and cultural features. Public restrooms and office spaces can also be seen on this floor, all reflecting the essence of interior design from the Republic of China era. The second floor serves as the core reading area of Zhong Reading Yard. With books filling the walls of bookshelves and seats placed near the windows, it allows readers to enjoy both their books and the stunning view of Chong’an Temple.
The entrance features a background wall, tree-shaped bookshelves, a coffee bar, and mirror spaces, creating a comfortable reading environment with an artistic touch.
The highlight of the third floor is a book-shaped pendant light, symbolizing the connection between the old Wuxi County Public Library and today’s Zhong Reading Yard flagship store. Additionally, a display area with famous local figures and a collection of ancient books reflects Wuxi’s cultural treasures. Besides, the transformation of the windowless dark room into a well-lit, comfortable space is achieved through a white metal ceiling and lighting design.
In brief, the design of Zhong Reading Yard not only shows respect for and inheritance of the historical culture of the Wuxi Bell Tower but also provides the public with a multifunctional space that integrates reading, leisure, and cultural experiences.
