The longstanding and evolving garden culture of Suzhou has naturally and profoundly influenced the city’s modern architectural endeavors. The rich cultural heritage and deep historical roots -have intertwined, forming a complete system where "city-architecture-garden" are seamlessly integrated.
Guided by the aesthetic sensibilities of the traditional scholar-official, we aspire to create a spiritual haven for today's Suzhou literati within a modern architectural framework. By extracting and reinterpreting the local forms through contemporary design language, we seek to craft a space that resonates with Suzhou's unique cultural essence.
Historically, true recluses were those who remained within the imperial court, yet the garden served as a scholar's compromise with nature. These scholars, guided by their artistic sensibilities and intuitive understanding of the environment, crafted gardens without strict geometric patterns or formulaic proportions. Their subtle and indirect aesthetic preferences and pursuit of atmosphere ensured that garden architecture and scenery were never fully revealed at once, resulting in an intentional ambiguity.
In the context of modern architectural spaces, which are often governed by strict logic and rational methods, how can we faithfully recreate this traditional sense of ambiguity.
By distilling and synthesizing the traditional techniques, we adopt not their physical forms but their underlying methods to cultivate spatial ambiguity across three key aspects: the spatial interfaces, the spatial enclosure, and the spatial intermediaries within it.
