Towering over the beach district of Downtown Vancouver, this three-bedroom penthouse felt dark and awkward without being updated in over 20 years, leaving a complete rebuild as the only way forward. The clients are hoping to welcome a child in the coming years; however, they love to entertain so also wanted a modern and sophisticated space. Therefore, the task became marrying functional indestructability with clean, elevated design, which resulted in a timeless, architecturally forward home with sensible storage and innovative finishes.
I was inspired to create dimension, by way of juxtaposing materials such as metal, wood, stone and textiles which are a cohesive vein that runs throughout the home.
You’ll notice the kitchen cabinet fronts are made of solid Dekton – a manmade stone that is nearly indestructible. This created the base in which we inset the countertop, backsplash and surround. As if a huge ice-cream scoop glided into a slab of solid stone, uncovering beautiful layered depths of wood. This wood is actually a high impact, one-of-a-kind laminate, custom engineered for us by a local company. It’s nonporous, fingerprint resistant and antimicrobial. The surface offers a hand-feel resembling real wood, but isn’t subject to natural wood’s expansion and contraction, making it an exceptional choice for this application.
The combination of high-level functionality paired with elevated aesthetics flows seamlessly into the rest of the home including the living area where we created a three-sided fireplace clad with Italian marble. Flanking this feature is a channel tufted banquette that doubles as additional seating and hidden storage, and floating metal shelving backed in mirror reflects the depth of the shelving, creating the illusion of additional depth to the space.
Two incredible bathrooms, new closets throughout, a custom makeup vanity in the primary bedroom and a newly defined entryway are just a few of the additional standouts of this spectacular renovation.
