This residential transformation took shape during the COVID-19 pandemic and represents a rare, unprecedented effort entirely conceived, designed, and constructed by a senior designer. Life is often compared to a voyage across an endless sea, with home as the harbor that sustains and protects us—a shared human ideal that transcends geography, culture, and time. During the pandemic, this idea gained renewed urgency, as the home became the most essential sanctuary for both body and spirit. Motivated by this realization, the designer translated the concept into reality by creating a personal “Home Harbor” within his own courtyard.
An intimate yet powerful landscape emerges. Sixty-eight boat-shaped forms are rhythmically “moored” throughout the site, composing a vivid sculptural scene. Defined by tension, contrast, and concentrated movement, these elements evoke vessels cutting through stormy waves. Together, they symbolize lives navigating uncertainty and pay special tribute to human resilience during the pandemic. The courtyard is thus transformed into a poetic refuge that supports new ways of living and functions as a large-scale, inhabitable environmental artwork.
The space suggests a universe of sea and starlight, infused with warmth and renewed vitality. Gathering areas appear to float on water or settle within the boat forms themselves, illustrating how domestic environments can respond creatively to changing social conditions. Integrating Eastern and Western cultural sensibilities, linking memory and contemporaneity, and embracing fully networked, interactive, digital-age thinking, the project offers a bold, optimistic, and dynamic vision of home—standing in clear contrast to conventional courtyard typologies.
Ecological principles are woven throughout the design. An existing tree is preserved and incorporated into the tea pavilion, anchoring the space both physically and symbolically. Reclaimed materials are reimagined as refined architectural components, while sustainable systems—solar energy, rainwater collection, and permeable paving—enhance resource efficiency and environmental performance. Achieved at exceptionally low cost and low environmental impact by a single senior individual, the project exemplifies creativity, adaptability, and perseverance.
Ultimately, this work has received numerous international design awards and seeks to inspire future living environments by providing human-centered comfort, spiritual resonance, and enduring memories of an extraordinary historical moment.
