Strategically situated at the intersection of Fengwu Metal Axis and the North-South Landscape Axis in Weiyang District, Xi’an, FREEDOM LAND by China Merchants Shekou represents a profound architectural response to the concept of the “future ideal neighborhood” within the context of urban regeneration. Conceived with the notion of an “island” as its spiritual core, the project transcends mere physical enclosure or openness—it aspires to cultivate a sustainable community that harmoniously integrates ecological resilience, cultural continuity, and an all-age-friendly lifestyle.
At the master planning level, the design adopts a low-intervention strategy that respects the site’s original grain. It preserves and enhances the regional green network, establishing a tripartite vertical ecological system composed of sunken courtyards, elevated communal podiums, and vertically articulated green façades. The sunken courtyards function as microclimate regulators, facilitating natural ventilation and rainwater harvesting. Meanwhile, the elevated ground floors dissolve conventional boundaries by embedding multifunctional programs—such as cafés, reading lounges, and children’s play zones—thereby creating (24/7), all-age “third places” that amplify social interaction and community vitality.
Architecturally, the façade employs a sculptural language: off-white natural-stone-effect paint paired with champagne-gold EPS detailing articulates a classical tripartite proportion, infusing modern aesthetics with Eastern elegance. Expansive high-transparency ultra-clear glass curtain walls not only optimize daylight penetration but also blur the threshold between interior and exterior, allowing residents to remain attuned to seasonal rhythms even in the heart of the city.
Material selection prioritizes locally sourced, recyclable components, complemented by meticulously detailed junctions that extend the building’s service life—adhering rigorously to the principle of minimizing embodied carbon. In terms of circulation, the project pioneers a “dual-ground-level homecoming system”: the upper ground level emphasizes ceremonial arrival and humanistic warmth, while the lower level efficiently links parking with communal amenities, achieving complete pedestrian-vehicle separation and spatial optimization.
The underground clubhouse, organized around the sunken courtyard, houses a gym, swimming pool, and other wellness facilities. Daylight is channeled through skylights, and greenery permeates the interiors, crafting a healthy, low-carbon living environment.
