Ronald McDonald House Shanghai

This case is a public welfare charity project funded by China Soong Ching Ling Foundation and Ronald McDonald House Charities, in cooperation with the Children's National Medical Center, and Shanghai Children's Medical Center affiliated to Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine. The brand-new Shanghai Ronald McDonald House will provide free accommodation and care services to children of poor families from other parts of the country seeking medical treatment in Shanghai Children's Medical Center. By investigating the actual needs and life habits of the users, the design team has made the building not only meet the living needs of sick children and their families, but also support volunteers to carry out activities. This case has won LEED Gold certificate in February, 2021.

The project enjoys an excellent location, with perfect supporting facilities and convenient transportation. The design team has made renovation and expansion on the basis of the original three-story building. In addition to meeting the functions of reception, office work, conference and accommodation, it introduces an extra floor of public service area with light steel structure on the roof terrace, comprising children's activity and reading area, family dining area, and public kitchen area, with an elevator to facilitate the vertical movement of users.

The project focuses on sustainability. It adopts high-efficiency water-saving appliances, LED lamps and induction control lamps. On the basis of meeting the ASHARE 62.1 standard, it adds an additional 30% fresh air volume. The fresh air unit is equipped with a filter screen of F7 grade filtration efficiency to provide cleaner and sufficient fresh air indoors. The floors are furnished with tailor-made classified garbage bins, and a special area is earmarked outside to store classified waste.
