Nestled along the Grand Canal in Gongshu District, Hangzhou, the project combines the area's historic charm with modern design innovation. Situated near the Grand Canal and Nanyang River, it takes inspiration from Song-dynasty mountain-and-water aesthetics to create Hangzhou's first three-dimensional canyon-style garden. This design integrates classical Jiangnan garden principles with the living tradition of Hangzhou’s waterside dwellings, reconstructing the spirit of the Grand Canal through form, culture, and space, blending daily vitality with poetic elegance.
The project features a cascade system that mimics the natural flow of the Grand Canal, with a three-tiered sunken space that connects the quarters. Ten themed waterside living scenarios echo ancient and modern lifestyles, while Song-dynasty influences are woven into the spatial imagery. Custom paving and emblem symbols embed Hangzhou’s traditional culture into the design, providing a cross-temporal dialogue between past and present.
The main entrance focuses on a 90-meter horizontal extension with a gold metal roof, adding a ritualistic touch. The facade uses jade luxury stone paired with a water feature wall, evoking the dynamic imagery of the Grand Canal. A central courtyard offers a three-tiered, 12x23 meter space, embodying Grand Canal culture and Song-dynasty aesthetics. A 145-meter-long man-made stream with stone-carved banks winds through the rear area, culminating in a cascading waterfall that balances strength and grace. Inspired by Jiangnan black-awning boats, the "Golden Boat" landscape in the core atrium offers an elegant, minimalist water platform immersed in nature.
By translating regional culture into contemporary spatial forms, the project offers residents a living experience that harmonizes with nature and culture. The design maximizes scarce landscape resources and modernizes traditional aesthetics, setting a high-quality standard for integrating culture and aesthetics in urban waterfront residential design.
