Yunlin Huanan Community Stone Terra Bookhouse

The team is working to combat marginal settlement Yiunlin Huanan Community. They preserved existing fields, renovated a dispensary, and restored the landscape using traditional techniques. The project aims to preserve historical buildings, traditional barriers, and agricultural culture while revitalizing community resources.
Hunan Elementary School, an experimental school in a rural area of Yunlin Taiwan, faced closure due to low enrollment 14 years ago. With only 23 students left, the school and community team decided to work together to secure resources and change the situation. Initially, the school team assisted the local elders in writing a rural regeneration plan and securing resources, and then the community team invested in professionalism and design. The community commercialized agricultural products, promoted food and farming education, and passed on traditional skills. This helped revive agriculture, improved the lifestyle in remote areas, increased the industry's value, and promoted sustainable consumption and production patterns.
This project is based on the principles of the symbiosis field, promoting local creativity and education on food and agriculture. By planting crops, operating stone terraces, restoring historical buildings, and preserving the landscape, the team maintains habitats of local species while increasing biodiversity and carbon sequestration. This positively impacts industries and shows how life, culture, and the natural environment can coexist. The traditional terraced tea plantation dispensary has been transformed into a stone-terraced bookstore that offers community tours, preserving past agricultural culture while recognizing Taiwan's agriculture evolution. It allows for passing on rural history and culture to future generations.
